A little bit about me
Hi, my name is Marissa Schulze and I am a nurse, midwife and Maternal and Child Health Nurse (MCHN) with professional experience spanning over a decade. I am currently working in a tertiary maternity hospital in Melbourne as a midwife and in the community as a MCHN. I LOVE my jobs! I think I was born to be a midwife.
My goal in life is to empower women with knowledge about birth, breastfeeding, postnatal care and child development.
My idea for The Breast Basket did not come to me overnight. It developed over the months of frustration and anger at companies who prey on and take advantage of mothers with gimmicky, expensive products. Many of these products make promises to women that they will have a trouble-free breastfeeding journey. I won’t make such promises. My hope is that with reading the booklet provided in the basket you will have knowledge surrounding breastfeeding and hopefully the skills to attack the challenges head on. You will also have remedies and equipment to help support you from before and after the baby is born.
I want to try to end idea that breastfeeding comes naturally to all women. This is not true. Most women will have some form of nipple damage, difficulty attaching baby to the breast or have some sort of anxiety surrounding breastfeeding to some degree. You are not alone. You and your baby are both learning the skills simultaneously to successfully breastfeed. It can take some time, different positions, and a lot of patience to figure it out.
Over years and years of trial and error I have gathered these key products and discovered what truly works for breastfeeding mothers.
Lastly, I wish I could be with you in your home, talking you through each product and taking time to show you how to use all of them. Lucky for you, I type like I talk. Reading my booklet will be as close as the real thing in your home sitting next to you cheering you on. You got this mumma! Breastfeeding is nothing to be scared of, take it one step at a time!
